Start with permission
Marketing email should go to people who have agreed to receive it. Explain what subscribers will receive and avoid purchased, scraped, or questionable lists. Permission protects trust, reduces complaints, and gives the sender a healthier audience.
Set expectations at signup
Tell people what they are signing up for, what benefit they receive, and how often you expect to send. If the first email arrives long after signup or the content is very different from what was promised, subscribers may forget why they joined.
Authenticate your domain
Google's current Gmail guidance requires all senders to use SPF or DKIM. Senders who send more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail accounts must use SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and meet additional requirements such as alignment and one-click unsubscribe for relevant marketing messages.
Build useful campaigns
Use email for a clear purpose such as education, product updates, onboarding, retention, or offers. Keep subject lines accurate, put the main value near the top, use readable formatting, and make the next action obvious. Segment when different groups genuinely need different messages.
Make unsubscribing simple
Every marketing program should provide a clear unsubscribe path. Gmail requires one-click unsubscribe for relevant marketing and subscribed messages from bulk senders. A reliable unsubscribe process protects trust and can reduce spam complaints.
Protect deliverability
Deliverability depends on sender reputation, authentication, recipient engagement, list quality, content, and sending patterns. Clean bounced and persistently unengaged addresses when your policy allows it. Avoid sudden unexplained volume spikes and monitor provider feedback.
Test before sending
Send test messages to multiple inboxes and devices. Check the From name, subject, links, images, mobile layout, personalization, unsubscribe path, and tracking. Test every important call to action before the full send.
Measure the right signals
Track delivery failures, bounces, spam complaints, clicks, conversions, and engagement trends. Open rates can be affected by privacy features and should not be treated as the only measure of success. Eligible Gmail senders can use Postmaster Tools to monitor compliance and reputation.
